Edward "Ted" Pedro Cruzat, 73, a prominent black physician who was well known in Chicago's upper social circles, died of lung disease on Wednesday, Feb.

He held a special interest in , speaking on the topic as a visiting lecturer at Northwestern University's medical school.

Cruzat also was a tennis player whose most prized trophy was a doubles title he won in the U.

Cruzat didn't immediately pursue the medical field.

He opened his first office in Chicago at 51st Street and King Drive after completing his residency in 1957.

Cruzat was born and raised in Alton, Ill.
